The title refers to Carlos Castaneda's term and
the 'warrior's' preparation and dealings with the 'Nagual' (Tales
of Power, 1976). This 3D video was shot at the videomaker's 'Los Serpientes'
at 'Land's End' (Los Cabos, Mexico).
This four-part work takes one on an imagistic journey
(through metaphor and interplay of co-incident selections from the music
of Brian Eno/David Byrne - 'My life in the Bush of Ghosts') -
from shipwreck to bone totems, from totem to dance, a dance with the
'Old Men' of Saguaro groves, climaxing with a intense stroboscopic sequence pitting
the voice of a Christian 'exorcist' against the spirit 'of possession', a very medieval and Catholic heritage of Mexico.

3 min. selections from 'VIRTUAL FLESH' in ANAGLYPH 3D on YOUTUBE:
This work concern itself with human sexual physical form and its mutations as they become 'kinetic sculptures' projected outward from the screen in a 3D space that feels like it 'pushes out' from the screen 'breathing' into the viewer's space. In this 3D video, nude female and male figures occupy a womb-like field of light, pushing against a membrane and shadow and form, with each movement, gesture, thrusting out towards the viewer. The television screen, or projection surface (if video-projected) becomes elastic and sculpture-like,
The 3D (passive VR) standard version is originally mastered on field-sequential NTSC format tapes. Digital transfers preserve the initial intent and result. The 'viewer interactive' proposed version - a interactive intallation featuring the film in VR or gallery space - has yet to be exhibited as commissioned by host institution.
Recommended only for ADULT AUDIENCES - meaning, this is not a 'pornographic' tape but contains nudity, and presumably could be 'offensive' to some.Shot with the participation and assistance of Fred Unterseher, Rebecca Deem at Zone Holographics (Los Angeles), and David Rimmer, Sarah Butterfield at Powell Street Studio (Vancouver).

This 3D videotape presents a stereoscopic - impressionistic journey and visual interpretation of the many sights of France - Paris scenes and performers, and Marseille and Nantes - during the videomaker's exhibition journey in 1997. This is experimental video, with poetic videography organized around specific and metaphoric themes that are contained within inter-titled sections. Image dissolve, overlay, colorize in post-production techniques used to evoke the land and cityscapes of France - a 'land of the impressionists'. Visual effects featuring 'echoes' and time-delay produce startling juxtapositions of stereoscopic 3D depth and 2D images 'in motion'.
Description of Film Exhibitions - France 1997
"The subjects of landscape, the 'impressionist way of seeing', historic archithecture, catholicism, surrealist 'chance meetings' of topics and images and other (French) Surrealist 'jokes' play out in sometimes a dream-like visual tapestry of blurred motion, superimposed spaces and textures, ending at the 'intersections of light'." (A.R.)

3D stereoscopic video - 7 min. - 1997-98
Produced
and Directed, Filmed and Edited with VFX by Al Razutis, 1997-8
Music selections from 'Dead Can Dance'
Filmed entirely in native 3D in France

"The statues speak of memory and time..." is the invocation to this impressionistic view of the famous/timeless classics inside the Louvre Museum (Paris) and the performance artist outside the museum.
This
strange meditation on time, space, and the meanings of 'being mortal' (and captured in an image)
features features a blend of motion time-smear` VFX and and stereoscopic
3-dimensional composition. The motion time-smear VFX was adapted specifically by A. R. to these experimental subjects and resulted in images in motion becoming 2D whereas when the subject image was 'still' it became 3D again.
Released
as a separate 3D shot film, it is also contained within 'FRANCE 1997'
Sound music from Dead Can Dance.
This entire work is contained in '3D SHORTS' and 'SELECTIONS'
'ANALOG 3D FILMS' as presented at Deja Vu - 2010 Exhibition

3D Video Clips of 'Virtual Imaging' on YouTube by XAR3D
This multi-part with SFX video is a cheeky walk with 'Alice' and Virtual Reality, in stereoscopic 3D forms and interpretations including commercial VR culture subjects in film. A series of episodes take us through the 'looking glass' both in stereo 3D and in VR and includes montage sequences from VR movies that mythologize virtual imaging and virtual reality. There was no further chapter or 'Part 2'.

This video is 'how it all began', the series of experimental 3D shorts by Al Razutis 1996 - 1998. Inspired by Saturna Island (Canada) beauty and using his borrowed Toshiba 3D camera, Razutis went 'meditating' in this arboreal island of cliffs and vistas.
Following the tradition of 'film-visual poetry' this 3-dimensional stereoscopic video tape is composed as a allegorical journey via image, sound, memory to an "island" - a time and a place at 'the edge of 'Euclid's two-dimensional sea'. It utilizes unique stereoscopic processes and videography to render a series of scenes in 3-dimensional depth: progressing from subtle to exaggerated '3-D' views.
Selected on tour with LANDSCAPES, a VIDEO OUT exhibition curated by Karen Knights in 1998.
Selected for presentation at National Stereoscopic Association 2002 (Riverside) Electronic Theater

DEAN FOGAL: CORPOREAL ART
3D stereoscopic video - 52 min.- 1996-97)
Produced
and Directed, Film and Editing by Al Razutis, in collaboration with Dean Fogal; 1996-7.
1 min. excerpt from WALKING ON AIR on YouTube:
Stereographic video documentation and interpretation of 'corporeal mime' performances by Dean Fogal and students of corporeal mime. Mr. Fogal is an accomplished mime artist and teacher, who studied corporeal mime with Etienne Decroux and Marcel Marceau in Paris.
This film resorts to the 'Lumiere Shot' technique, fixed camera, long take for the performer and choreography to describe and express the space. This cinematic technique is precisely suited to performances and subjects in 'mime'.
This tape contains four short mime performances - 'Chairing' and 'Walking on Air' by Dean Fogal, 'Discovery of Loss' with Dean Fogal and Anthony Artibello, and 'Shadows of Love' with Daniel Lomas and Sue Biely. These shorts were created 1996-7 as a collaboration between performers and 3D video maker (Razutis) and are only available by contacting Razutis at alrazutis@ymail.com.
