MIMETIC GLASS
Holographic Film Animation - 1974
Cylinder hologram gate housing used in the creation of 'Mimetic Glass' at Visual Alchemy 1974. Designed and constructed by Al Razutis and plexiglas manufacturers |
'MIMETIC GLASS' hologram (1974) was rediscovered
in 2010 in storage. This film animation hologram may be the 'first
motion picture hologram' made in Canada. This is true holographic animation. Verification or contesting
claims are encouraged.
TECHNIQUE EMPLOYED: Animation with patial multi-plexing (separate frames) of laser transmission hologram with moving subject.
Exhibited in October 2010 at the Deja Vu Exhibition of Holographic Art and Stereoscopic 3D, Vancouver, Canada.
In the collection of Al Razutis and located in Saturna Island, Canada.

Installed in exhibitions in Burnaby, Ottawa, and 7 cities across Canada 1977, with final exhibition in Seattle 1978, USA
Visual Alchemy - Complete Exhibition List (Inaugural show catalog)
Visual Alchemy - Exhibition Press Release (March
9, 1977)
"Since 1972 Al Razutis has been working independently on a program
dealing with the creation of three dimensional imagery via laser holographic
techniques. An operational holographic laboratory was built by Razutis
in which he has carried out holographic works with the intention of
developing the media into an art form. Art and technology are explored
as alchemical processes. The exhibition concerns itself with holography
as sculpture and art rather than topical perceptual gimics or media
novelties."

Newtonian Galactic Assembly Line - October 2010 at Deja Vu Vancouver, Canada.
Complete credits and selected exhibitions list for this work.
"NEWTONIAN GALACTIC ASSEMBLY LINE was originally conceived as a 'floor piece' to be exhibited horizontally and upon which people could walk. This proved to be not practical and the piece was finalized as a 4 foot x 5 foot wall piece and internationally exhibited as a wall piece. The idea for creating a mosaic of alternating ortho and pseudo views of the same subject came from pictures of galaxies where one would imagine 'invisible forces' connected all things. The work is best seen interactively, with the viewer moving about to see the sea anemone-like interactions between adjoining images. Alternatively, the piece can be illuminated by moving lights. The 'newtonian galactic assembly line' title refers to Newtonian mechanics as an interlocking 'gear universe' that is transformed to light interacting shapes that are holographic, and therefore not physically 'solid'. A surrealist magic carpet." (Al Razutis)

SURROGATE DRESSED FOR ART NEW VOGUE - 1984
Dichromate Reflection Holograms
Produced at Holocrafts, Delta, Canada
Presented at Wavefront Exhibition 1985
Holographic Technique Employed:
Double-exposed (in two states superimposed) interferograms in dichromate produced with double-exposed CW laser illumination. Two distinct states in time recorded as induced contour patterns of interference fringes of surface displacement on model.
Background:
The 1984 interferometric dichromate holograms (face, breast) replaced the original Silver Halide reflection holograms created in 1974-76 by Al Razutis at Visual Alchemy, Vancouver. Both the manequin and recording process were 'dressed up' for 'art in the 80's': "Make-up with stress lines for Art New Vogue and the latest styles of fashionable virtual reality & holography. " (A.R.)
